Coronary artery disease (CAD) is characterized by the narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries, often due to a buildup of plaque. This can lead to angina, or chest pain, and more serious events like heart attacks. Heart failure, another significant area of cardiology, occurs when the heart is unable to pump blood effectively, which can result from various issues including CAD, high blood pressure, and problems with the heart valves.
Cardiologists use a variety of strategies to treat cardiovascular diseases, including: Coronary artery bypass surgery, Percutaneous coronary intervention, and Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty and stenting.
Given the critical role the heart plays in the body’s overall function, cardiology is a vital specialty in medicine, focused on both maintaining heart health and managing complex cardiovascular diseases.
