Explaining Abnormal Uterine Bleeding

Abnormal Uterine Bleeding (AUB)

Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) refers to any unusual bleeding from the uterus that is irregular in volume, frequency, duration, or timing. It can occur in women of all ages but is most common during puberty and perimenopause.

Types of AUB

AUB includes different patterns of bleeding, such as:

  • Heavy Menstrual Bleeding (Menorrhagia) – Excessive or prolonged menstrual bleeding (lasting more than 7 days or soaking through pads/tampons in less than 2 hours).

  • Irregular Menstrual Bleeding (Metrorrhagia) – Bleeding between periods.

  • Frequent or Infrequent Bleeding (Polymenorrhea/Oligomenorrhea) – Periods occurring too frequently (less than 21 days apart) or too infrequently (more than 35 days apart).

  • Postmenopausal Bleeding – Bleeding occurring after menopause (when periods have stopped for a year).

  • Breakthrough Bleeding – Unexpected bleeding while using hormonal birth control.
